Uzbekistan – the Rising Power of Central Asia
Uzbekistan has excellent natural resources, together with a well-educated work-force, but in the 25 years since independence has been held back by restrictive trade and investment policies. A new, reform minded President was elected last year, and we are now seeing a much better business environment. The currency is convertible and businesses are waking up to the fact that Uzbekistan could well be the new power house in Central Asia. Priority sectors identified for trade and investment include: Mining; Oil & Gas; Education; Textiles; Energy; Transport; Tourism and Agribusiness. The European Bank for Reconstruction & Development are evaluating a number of possible investments, and the Asian Development Bank, the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank and the World Bank are also providing finance for a number of projects. UK Export Finance have credit lines and related insurance products available for UK businesses looking at the market.
